Cotton balls light up easily. Get a flint and you don't have to wait 5 minutes. If you put a little vaseline on the cotton balls, they light easily and burn longer.

Also fine steel wool.

Stuff almost lights up like gasoline.

But you may not have a flint and steel to start one with.

This way common house hold stuff will do the trick...

But I just cant see anyplace where that appilcation(plus all the related materials) would be handy.

Also the other fails to mention how long does this abilty to make fire lasts.

You could problem use that potatoe as a clock and get better results IMO

Makes a simple battery from a potato. 1. Cut in half. 2. Scoop out a
teaspoon of potato from one of the halves. 3. fill the hole with salt
and a dab of toothpaste. (makes an electrolyte) 4. use toothpick to punch two holes through the other half potato. 5. run two short pieces of wire through thiose holes. About six inches long each piece with deinsulated ends. 6. place the halves of potato back together so that one end of each of the two wires contacts the salt/tootpaste mix. Use the toothpicks to secure the two halves of potato together.
7. Let it stand for 5 minutes. 8. wrap a piece of cotton ball or something
similar to one end of the wire bare end that protrudes from the potato.
Take the other bare ended wire and make contact between the two
wire ends.
The cotton wull burst into flame and burn.

Yep, much more likely to have a battery or two on you...works even better! A bit of suuperfine steel wool and cotton balls too.
Best though is always carry a book of matches...better yet a butane
lighter (cost $2)
